The race started with both Mercedes drivers nipping into the lead and remaining there throughout the session. There was only a brief moment when Nico Hülkenberg popped up in P1, having chosen a two stop strategy compared to most of the top ten on a three stop. The German managed to finish in fifth place, for a strong performance.

Sergio Pérez didn't start the race, the car unable to get out of the garage in time for the start, and there were a handful of retirements due to mechanics and collisions, and for Daniel Ricciardo - pretty much every problem it's possible to have.
