The Mercedes pace stepped up another notch in Barcelona, with both drivers finishing over 40 seconds ahead of the next contender. The domination covers what was a fascinating race, though, with a chaotic start leading to a very anxious finish. Some great overtaking moves throughout the field, a recovery drive here and there, and a constant pressure between several of the teammates.

If you missed any of the action, do relive the Spanish Grand Prix with the Factbyte Factbox replay below. Lap by lap commentary guides you through each stage of the race, towards the fantastic finish and the post-race activities.

As it happened: Spain 2014 - The race

Event Highlights

  • Lewis Hamilton wins an epic battle to the finish line, defending from Nico Rosberg.
  • Daniel Ricciardo takes third, his first official podium of the season.
  • Sebastian Vettel improves from 15th on the grid to finish 4th.
  • Pastor Maldonado clips a Caterham and gets a 5 second stop/go penalty.
  • Jean-Éric Vergne (exhaust) and Kamui Kobayashi (brakes) both retire.
  • 11:53

Welcome! It's race day, and I'm anticipating the race so much that I've opened the FBFB early. Let the build up begin!

  • 11:54

The driver's parade has been underway for a while, each driver in a separate car which is the better way of doing it, I think.

  • 11:55

QuoteFernando Alonso jumped out of his car to run towards the crowd, even pushing his baseball cap under the fence for a young fan. He described the crowd's enthusiasm: "I think it’s a kind of a football atmosphere, with the people screaming and the people jumping every lap we pass here. That’s different, at other circuits they just sit, they enjoy the cars. Here it’s pure passion so that’s nice."

In pre-race interviews, Daniel Ricciardo lets slip that he's aiming for a two-stop strategy. He tries to cover it by suggesting he may be leading the competition astray, but the uncomfortable laugh shows he definitely wasn't meant to say that.

  • 12:05

Talking of tyres, Pirelli have brought the two hardest compounds to Spain, with the hard tyre (orange sidewalls) and the medium (white sidewalls). So far, there have been complaints from drivers that they might be too durable, but we will soon see!

  • 12:09

Nico Rosberg has said that discussions have taken place with race director Charlie Whiting regarding the formation lap. Drivers have been concerned about the length of time they're waiting at the front of the field, as well as how slow the lap has been on other occasions. "Charlie clarified it for both sides, so the people further back are not allowed to leave the big gaps and we at the front need to keep up the pace."

  • 12:12

QuoteRomain Grosjean: "I think it’s good for all of us, we had a difficult start to the season but I’ve believed in the team and everyone’s stayed united and worked hard. We had a few ideas when we come here to try on the car… P5 on the grid is good, it feels nice to get back to where we are normally, more used to it. Hopefully the race will be as good as quali."

  • 12:17

Defending champion Sebastian Vettel is having a dire weekend so far. He managed just four laps on Friday, after the car developed a problem that required extensive repairs. In FP3, he completed 20 laps and caught up a little, allowing him to make it through to Q3 in qualifying. Once there, however, he failed to set a lap time after the gearbox on the RB10 gave up beneath him. A change of gearbox means a five place grid penalty, resulting in 15th on the grid for the German.

Pastor Maldonado crashed in the first session of qualifying, which means that for the second race weekend in a row, he had to be given special permission by the stewards to be allowed to race.

  • 12:21

Jean-Éric Vergne is the only other driver with a penalty for the grid today. During practice on Friday, one of the wheels came off his wagon, and the team got a hefty fine for the unsafe release, with the driver dropped back ten places.

  • 12:29

QuoteClaire Williams is feeling superbly optimistic ahead of the race today: "We’ve won here about six times in the past. We won here in 2012 but that feels like a long time ago now. The guys have done a very good job in qualifying so I’m hoping they can get a good start and get some points.

"Here we bought some significant upgrades, those seem to have done the job. Both drivers are running them on their cars today, I’m hoping that’s the true pace of the car. I think we’ve missed one or two opportunities in the last four races, so if one or both of them could get on the podium that could be fantastic."

  • 12:30

At the back of the grid, Max Chilton was the best of the backmarkers, putting in a good final lap to pull ahead of the others. Both Marussia drivers were ahead of the Caterham duo, with Kamui Kobayashi bringing up the rear.

  • 12:32

TweetTweet from @f1elvis: Slightly amusing scenes on the grid now as there seems to be total confusion as to who has which grid slots. It's musical grid trolleys. McL, RBR, STR & SFI all having to repack their kit, move & re set up in correct places. Even the grid girls seemed to be in the wrong slots.

Nico Hülkenberg ready to climb in and make his way to his tenth place spot. The grid is packed with people making their final preparations.

  • 12:41

QuoteKevin Magnussen: "I think we’ve got the tyres that we didn’t use yesterday so that’s positive. Making the best of that, getting a good first lap is important here. There’s always good opportunities in the first corner. You need to be very careful with the tyres, this year is my first year, but this year there’s less downforce and a lot of power. It’s the same for everyone."

  • 12:44

QuoteJenson Button making his way off the grid for a brief break before the race: "It’s quite different today in terms of the weather. It’s quite overcast, a bit cooler. Hopefully we’re in our very narrow working range. I don’t think we’ll get a big smile behind the visor this afternoon, we’ll see what we get. Hopefully it’ll be better than what we’ve experienced so far this weekend. We didn’t expect to be this close to the Ferrari, just a few tenths off in qualifying."

  • 12:47

Valtteri Bottas is pointing out that he'll sacrifice position in turn one in order to be in the best possible position for turn three. Thinking ahead, that guy.

  • 12:49

Romain Grosjean thinks tyre strategy will very much depend on the rate of wear, particularly as it rained last night. Cooler temperatures, a greener track, it could be a challenge today.

  • 13:22 Lap 13

Vettel gives up on the overtake and dives into the pit lane. The first scheduled stop of the day and it's the hard tyre going on the Red Bull.

  • 13:23 Lap 14

It was a late call for Vettel, the mechanics just getting in position as the car arrived. They're so slick, it was a super quick stop as normal. He rejoined in 21st position.

  • 13:24 Lap 14

Ricciardo is on Bottas' case again, half a second between the two.

  • 13:24 Lap 14

  • 13:26 Lap 16

Replays show Vettel desperately trying to get past Kamui Kobayashi, the Caterham putting up an excellent fight but the superior pace of the Red Bull wins out eventually.

  • 13:27 Lap 16

In the second round of pit stops, Kimi Räikkönen has lost out to his teammate, coming out behind Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel. 7th place for Kimi now.

  • 14:13 Lap 46

Hamilton is giving his race engineer, poor Bono, an absolute earful. He wants constant updates, he disagrees with the amount of front wing in his pit stop, and he's not even sure why he was brought in when his tyres were fine!

  • 14:14 Lap 46

Rosberg, Ricciardo and Bottas all come into the pit lane. It's not been a good stint for Rosberg, who remains behind Hamilton as he rejoins the action.

Fernando Alonso also comes in for some fresh rubber, dropping him back down behind his teammate and Sebastian Vettel again.

  • 14:30 Lap 57

Vettel's got the gap to Kimi down to under a second. It shouldn't be long before he gets ahead of the Ferrari.

TweetTweet from @MercedesAMGF1: Lapped traffic despatched: it's a straight fight to the flag! 5 laps to go, even times last lap, who will it be?!

  • 14:38 Lap 62

There's also a great fight for fourth, with Vettel closing in to within four tenths of Bottas.

  • 14:40 Lap 64

It's tense, as Vettel puts the pressure on Bottas but can't make the move down the home straight. Three incredible battles going on here.

  • 14:40 Lap 64

Rosberg is within the one second DRS zone now.

  • 14:40 Lap 64

Alonso finally makes the move on Kimi Räikkönen, getting sixth place from his Ferrari teammate.

  • 14:41 Lap 65

Vettel does make a dive to get ahead of Bottas, putting the German in fourth place.

  • 14:43 Lap 66

Final lap, and the two Mercedes lap Kimi Räikkönen to begin their last tour of the circuit.

  • 14:43 Lap 66

Only six drivers remain on the lead lap.

  • 14:44 Lap 66

Rosberg locks up, there's no time left for him now. He's going to have to settle for second.

  • 14:46

Ricciardo is a full 48 seconds down the road, but he crosses the line for the final podium position. Vettel is further back in fourth place, a great drive to claw that back from 15th on the grid. He also sets the fastest lap of the race.

The boys are out of the car, big hugs for Hamilton with the mechanics. A fair handshake between the two Mercedes boys in the green room. Rosberg has a wry smile, but he'll be gutted to lose his championship lead.

Hamilton and Rosberg on the podium

QuotePodium quotes - Lewis Hamilton: "Big thank you to my team, they’ve just done an incredible job this year. I’m really happy with the support I’ve had this year, it’s the best I’ve ever had. Thanks to the fans in the grandstands. My first win in Spain, it means everything to me.

"I wasn’t fast enough really today, Nico was quicker. I struggled a lot with the balance and really had to rely on my engineers a lot more to give me the gaps and find where I could find time. Nico was just generally quicker this weekend, but fortunately I could just keep him behind."

  • 15:00

QuotePodium quotes - Nico Rosberg: "I think one more lap, I could have given it a good go. Unfortunately that was it, a bit gutted but still, second place. It’s still close in the championship, many more races to go anyways. I’ll be going to Monaco to do it one better, try and come first there and repeat the win from last year. That’s the aim."

  • 15:01

QuotePodium quotes - Daniel Ricciardo: "They were a long way ahead, so I think coming into the race today we knew a boring race would have been a pretty good one for us. We knew we didn’t have the pace of Mercedes, we looked like a third place car. In the end that’s what it was. We had a pretty comfortable third place, and we just had to focus on getting the tyres to last two stops. Really nice to be on the podium and I’m sure I’ll get to keep it this time."

QuoteSebastian Vettel: "I think we did what we could, obviously a difficult weekend all in all. I didn’t get a lot of practice. Was quite happy with the car in the race, in the beginning had to be patient, very tricky when you’re stuck in a train… you lose grip on the tyres. Once the traffic cleared for us, we were able to use the pace. I think it was important to maintain the same pace as the guys on options. I think we had a good strategy… "

  • 15:13

The race was split into three, then. The first half saw plenty of movement through the field, there was a lull in the middle, and then the end was as tense as racing can be.

  • 15:13

It was nice to see the Ferrari pair allowed to race, and as always the Mercedes duo were also allowed to battle it to the very line. Rosberg ended up just 0.6s behind his teammate.

  • 15:15

Strategy calls were key to getting a good result here, and both Kimi Räikkönen and Nico Hülkenberg aired grievances over the radio towards the end of the race.

  • 15:15

A great result for the Red Bull guys, with Valtteri Bottas disappointed to lose out on fourth but matching his best result so far this year and picking up another good points haul for Williams.

  • 15:15

Two weeks now until the next race in Monaco. Rosberg goes in to the weekend as favourite, in the best car, a home race, and winner last year, but no matter what he does at the moment, Hamilton seems to get the better of him.

  • 15:16

It should be a good race, so I hope you'll be back to join me. Until then, stay tuned to Sidepodcast for all the news and views as we unpick the best bits from the weekend in Spain.
