  The driver's parade has been underway for a while, each driver in a separate car which is the better way of doing it, I think.

  Fernando Alonso jumped out of his car to run towards the crowd, even pushing his baseball cap under the fence for a young fan. He described the crowd's enthusiasm: "I think it’s a kind of a football atmosphere, with the people screaming and the people jumping every lap we pass here. That’s different, at other circuits they just sit, they enjoy the cars. Here it’s pure passion so that’s nice."

  In pre-race interviews, Daniel Ricciardo lets slip that he's aiming for a two-stop strategy. He tries to cover it by suggesting he may be leading the competition astray, but the uncomfortable laugh shows he definitely wasn't meant to say that.

  Talking of tyres, Pirelli have brought the two hardest compounds to Spain, with the hard tyre (orange sidewalls) and the medium (white sidewalls). So far, there have been complaints from drivers that they might be too durable, but we will soon see!

  Nico Rosberg has said that discussions have taken place with race director Charlie Whiting regarding the formation lap. Drivers have been concerned about the length of time they're waiting at the front of the field, as well as how slow the lap has been on other occasions. "Charlie clarified it for both sides, so the people further back are not allowed to leave the big gaps and we at the front need to keep up the pace."

  Romain Grosjean: "I think it’s good for all of us, we had a difficult start to the season but I’ve believed in the team and everyone’s stayed united and worked hard. We had a few ideas when we come here to try on the car… P5 on the grid is good, it feels nice to get back to where we are normally, more used to it. Hopefully the race will be as good as quali."

  Defending champion Sebastian Vettel is having a dire weekend so far. He managed just four laps on Friday, after the car developed a problem that required extensive repairs. In FP3, he completed 20 laps and caught up a little, allowing him to make it through to Q3 in qualifying. Once there, however, he failed to set a lap time after the gearbox on the RB10 gave up beneath him. A change of gearbox means a five place grid penalty, resulting in 15th on the grid for the German.

  Pastor Maldonado crashed in the first session of qualifying, which means that for the second race weekend in a row, he had to be given special permission by the stewards to be allowed to race.

  Jean-Éric Vergne is the only other driver with a penalty for the grid today. During practice on Friday, one of the wheels came off his wagon, and the team got a hefty fine for the unsafe release, with the driver dropped back ten places.

  Claire Williams is feeling superbly optimistic ahead of the race today: "We’ve won here about six times in the past. We won here in 2012 but that feels like a long time ago now. The guys have done a very good job in qualifying so I’m hoping they can get a good start and get some points.

  "Here we bought some significant upgrades, those seem to have done the job. Both drivers are running them on their cars today, I’m hoping that’s the true pace of the car. I think we’ve missed one or two opportunities in the last four races, so if one or both of them could get on the podium that could be fantastic."

  At the back of the grid, Max Chilton was the best of the backmarkers, putting in a good final lap to pull ahead of the others. Both Marussia drivers were ahead of the Caterham duo, with Kamui Kobayashi bringing up the rear.

  Kevin Magnussen: "I think we’ve got the tyres that we didn’t use yesterday so that’s positive. Making the best of that, getting a good first lap is important here. There’s always good opportunities in the first corner. You need to be very careful with the tyres, this year is my first year, but this year there’s less downforce and a lot of power. It’s the same for everyone."

  Jenson Button making his way off the grid for a brief break before the race: "It’s quite different today in terms of the weather. It’s quite overcast, a bit cooler. Hopefully we’re in our very narrow working range. I don’t think we’ll get a big smile behind the visor this afternoon, we’ll see what we get. Hopefully it’ll be better than what we’ve experienced so far this weekend. We didn’t expect to be this close to the Ferrari, just a few tenths off in qualifying."

  Hamilton is giving his race engineer, poor Bono, an absolute earful. He wants constant updates, he disagrees with the amount of front wing in his pit stop, and he's not even sure why he was brought in when his tyres were fine!

  Rosberg, Ricciardo and Bottas all come into the pit lane. It's not been a good stint for Rosberg, who remains behind Hamilton as he rejoins the action.

  Hamilton's paranoia ratchets up another notch, and Bono tries to soothe his nerves. The gap to Rosberg is still just under four seconds, with Nico on the medium compound and Lewis on the harder tyre.

  Vettel's rise through the order has been subtle but effective, he's now in fifth, tucked up two seconds behind Fernando Alonso.

  Rosberg sets the fastest lap of the race so far, the gap to his teammate has dropped to three seconds now.

  Behind them, Ricciardo continues to race his own race, potentially on for a legitimate podium finish this afternoon.

  Sebastian Vettel comes into the pit lane for his third stop - super quick turnaround by the mechanics, 2.5 seconds, and the German rejoins in front of Grosjean, 7th place.

  Fernando Alonso also comes in for some fresh rubber, dropping him back down behind his teammate and Sebastian Vettel again.

  Vettel passes the backmarker of Jules Bianchi, hoping for a clear run to move ahead of Alonso, and to close up to Räikkönen. He increases the gap over Alonso to two seconds.

  Vettel's got the gap to Kimi down to under a second. It shouldn't be long before he gets ahead of the Ferrari.

  A brave dive down the inside from Vettel, and thankfully Kimi left him room. The Red Bull gets ahead, for fifth place.

  Ricciardo is a full 48 seconds down the road, but he crosses the line for the final podium position. Vettel is further back in fourth place, a great drive to claw that back from 15th on the grid. He also sets the fastest lap of the race.

  Podium quotes - Daniel Ricciardo: "They were a long way ahead, so I think coming into the race today we knew a boring race would have been a pretty good one for us. We knew we didn’t have the pace of Mercedes, we looked like a third place car. In the end that’s what it was. We had a pretty comfortable third place, and we just had to focus on getting the tyres to last two stops. Really nice to be on the podium and I’m sure I’ll get to keep it this time."

  Sebastian Vettel: "I think we did what we could, obviously a difficult weekend all in all. I didn’t get a lot of practice. Was quite happy with the car in the race, in the beginning had to be patient, very tricky when you’re stuck in a train… you lose grip on the tyres. Once the traffic cleared for us, we were able to use the pace. I think it was important to maintain the same pace as the guys on options. I think we had a good strategy… "

  The race was split into three, then. The first half saw plenty of movement through the field, there was a lull in the middle, and then the end was as tense as racing can be.

  It was nice to see the Ferrari pair allowed to race, and as always the Mercedes duo were also allowed to battle it to the very line. Rosberg ended up just 0.6s behind his teammate.

  Strategy calls were key to getting a good result here, and both Kimi Räikkönen and Nico Hülkenberg aired grievances over the radio towards the end of the race.

  A great result for the Red Bull guys, with Valtteri Bottas disappointed to lose out on fourth but matching his best result so far this year and picking up another good points haul for Williams.

  Two weeks now until the next race in Monaco. Rosberg goes in to the weekend as favourite, in the best car, a home race, and winner last year, but no matter what he does at the moment, Hamilton seems to get the better of him.
