The temperatures were high as the red lights went out to kick off the final race before the summer break, and tempers were flaring as teammates collided, swapped positions down to team orders, and failed to change places too. There were a handful of breakdowns, one safety car period, and many, many lapped cars by the time the chequered flag fell.

If you missed any of the action or want to relive lap by lap what went down at the Hungaroring today, then read on for the Factbyte Factbox coverage. It may not have been a stellar race from start to finish, but it continued to add to the narrative of 2017 and makes the first race back after the holiday a must watch.

As it happened: Hungary 2017 - The race

Event Highlights

  • Sebastian Vettel wins, with Kimi Räikkönen holding off Lewis Hamilton for second place.
  • Hamilton gives back third place to Bottas after failing to get past the Ferrari.
  • Fernando Alonso finishes sixth, and nabs the fastest lap of the race.
  • Max Verstappen picks up ten second penalty after knocking teammate Daniel Ricciardo out on lap 1.
  • Paul di Resta retires after subbing for Massa at Williams, his car developing an oil leak on lap 63.
  • 12:30

Hi there! It's time for the Hungarian Grand Prix, the last race before the summer break, so let's make it a good one, eh?

  • 12:30

There's been quite a lot going on so far this weekend, most notably of course, the fact that Paul di Resta is making a return to the sport, filling in for Felipe Massa at Williams.

  • 12:30

Poor Massa took part in all three free practice sessions but wasn't feeling too good, so the team called upon their reserve driver to do his duty and fill in. He qualified second from last, but it actually wasn't too bad a performance compared to his teammate and given that he hasn't raced since 2013.

  • 12:30

If you need to catch up with any of the happenings so far, I can (biasedly) recommend taking some time to listen to F1Minute:

A great job by the two McLarens to get into the top ten and they have gained a position from their qualifying place too as Nico Hülkenberg took on a five place grid penalty for changing the gearbox. He dropped to 12th on the grid.

  • 12:36

Daniil Kvyat also picked up a penalty, just three places for him, but for impeding another driver. Kvyat has had a woeful few weeks, so will be hoping to redeem himself today.

If you're looking for a teammate battle to watch, then Haas might be the one. Grosjean and Magnussen have beaten each other five times each. On the other end of the scale, Renault have a dominant driver (Hulk 8, Palmer 2), and Ferrari even more so (Vettel 9, Kimi 1).

  • 12:58

All drivers are starting on the red supersoft tyres except for two. Kvyat down in 16th has the yellow softs on, and Paul di Resta in the penultimate grid slot also has soft tyres on that Williams.

  • 13:00

Overtaking can be tricky around the Hungaroring, but there are a few variables we can watch out for - tyres, rookie drivers, that long run to the first corner.

  • 13:01

"That was amateur to say the least. Just frustrating, it’s not like he was trying to pass. I don’t think he likes when a teammate gets in front of him. You’ve got a whole race to try and repair a mistake, but the pass was never on… Obviously the team will do their bit and I will do my bit, but yea, we’ll sort it out."

Team radioTeam radio from Kimi Räikkönen: "I had the speed to stay out."

  • 13:56 Lap 36

A few more pit stops are unfolding in the midfield, but Sergio Pérez's stands out as a slow one.

  • 13:57 Lap 36

Max Verstappen is out in the lead of the race, he's no doubt putting off his pit stop because he's got that 10 second penalty to take when he does.

  • 13:57 Lap 37

Alonso has been chasing Sainz for lap after lap, and they've come into the pit lane at the same time. McLaren did their best but Toro Rosso got Sainz out JUST INCHES in front. Alonso tries around the next few corners, but he's still looking at the rear wing of Carlos' car.

  • 13:58 Lap 37

In his efforts, Alonso runs wide off track and misses the chicane. He backs out and gives Carlos some breathing space.

  • 14:07 Lap 43

Nico Hülkenberg is the highest placed driver who has not yet stopped, he's running in sixth place. Jolyon Palmer is the only other one, now sitting eighth. Vandoorne has just pitted for his own stop.

  • 14:07 Lap 44

  • 14:11 Lap 47

A clear team order has allowed Hamilton past Bottas, so the Brit is up to third now. Out front, Vettel is holding just about a second over Kimi, but they'll be under pressure from Mercedes very quickly.

  • 14:11 Lap 47

Hamilton's next lap is a full second quicker than the two Ferrari drivers, so he really did have pace to spare.

  • 14:13 Lap 48

All the cars have now stopped, so that should be it for pit lane action barring any incidents.

  • 14:14 Lap 49

A replay of Nico Hülkenberg's pit stop shows an excessive delay as the front right wouldn't come off. They had to swap wheel guns, whilst the brakes on that Renault smoked insistently. He got going again but is down in 12th now.

    "Confirm, Kimi, confirm."

  • 14:24 Lap 56

  • 14:26 Lap 58

  • 14:28 Lap 59

The battle at the front is engaging, but got to give props to others in the top ten. Alonso sitting in sixth has done a great job, and both Force Indias are in the points for another weekend.

  • 14:29 Lap 59

Hamilton says he'll have to wait for a mistake from the cars in front, and then runs a little wide himself. Keeps in contention though. He's still pressuring Kimi but there's no signs of a change.

  • 14:29 Lap 60

Out front Vettel has managed to nip out something more of a lead. He's got about 1.7s on the chasing pair now.

TweetTweet from @autosportlive: Vettel whispers in Raikkonen's ear and pats him on the shoulder, but Raikkonen doesn't look that interested and chats to Bottas instead.

  • 14:54

It may not have been a scintillating race but there were moments of tension and some surprises to keep us entertained. And it's a good result for the championship, as Vettel stays ahead with not one but two Mercedes drivers now chasing him to the finish.

  • 14:55

Red Bull will have a situation on their hands to deal with, but if ever there is a team used to that, it's the squad from Milton Keynes. Daniel Ricciardo seems to have a sensible head on his shoulders, but Max Verstappen has some explaining to do after a difficult afternoon.

  • 14:55

It was disappointing for Paul di Resta not to be able to finish this race, but he did a good job and didn't embarrass Williams. The team have some work to do, though, as Toro Rosso are quickly catching them - now just two points apart.

  • 14:56

McLaren have overtaken Sauber to move into ninth place in the championship, a great job by them and a worry for Sauber who are STILL undergoing changes and trying to shore up the team with their new owners.

We're heading into the summer break now, four weeks off with some enforced downtime for everyone, but then it's back into the final leg of the season with the ever-popular Belgian Grand Prix. I'll be back then and I hope you'll join me!
