With Mercedes locking out the front row, it was always going to be an explosive race between Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Perhaps we didn't expect it would end up how it did, but it's an afternoon that will have repercussions for the rest of the season. The rain stayed away to allow racing to continue unhindered, and tyre strategy proved crucial in gaining or losing positions.

Overtaking galore, four-way battles for position, and a change in race leader on the odd occasion all added up to a great afternoon of racing. Relive each lap via the Factbyte Factbox for the fabulous Belgian Grand Prix.

As it happened: Belgium 2014 - The race

Event Highlights

  • Hamilton snatches the lead from polesitter Rosberg off the line but Nico crashes into the back of Lewis on lap two.
  • Daniel Ricciardo moved into the lead as Hamilton dropped back and eventually retired from the race.
  • Other DNFs included both Lotus drivers, Jules Bianchi and André Lotterer (after only a couple of laps).
  • Battling for the mid points position sees McLaren, Vettel and Alonso in a four-way fight to the very last lap.

It's Spa-Francorchamps so naturally all eyes are on the skies. So far, the sun is shining but there are plenty of clouds in the sky that could turn threatening at any moment.

  • 12:31

With half an hour until the race gets underway, the pit lane has opened and thus drivers are heading out to see the state of the track at this point of the weekend. Qualifying was wet but the track is dry today.

Of course, today is the debut of André Lotterer, who is stepping in to Kamui Kobayashi's boots for what is potentially just a one-off race. He managed to outqualify his teammate yesterday, which was an impressive start considering the conditions. On the grid now, he's starting to look a little edgy: "It’s been a steep learning curve. I’d never driven the car in the rain, there’s no worse conditions to go into qualifying. Just tried to make the most out of it, learning as fast as I can. Up until now I was okay, but of course, my first Grand Prix, it would be wrong not to be nervous."

  • 12:45

QuoteNico Hülkenberg, out of place on the grid in 18th: "Yesterday we did some mistakes but today is another day. We still have a good race on our hands because the car is fast, so we should be able to recover some. First priority is to stay out of trouble, survive the first lap, then build up on it. The chance of rain climbs from 2pm onwards. My guess is it’s just going to be a slick race."

  • 12:48

Romain Grosjean has a seat just beside the Lotus. He's getting in the zone but also looks disappointed with 15th place on the grid.

  • 12:49

QuoteKevin Magnussen, sporting the makings of a beard: "It’s a decent start position, P7. With a good start, first corner, good lap, could have a good race. Not hoping for rain, it’s too cold."

QuoteRob Smedley, Head of Vehicle Performance at Williams: "Slightly disappointed with qualifying yesterday, probably could have been third and fourth if everything had been perfect. Looked good on Friday with the long run in the dry. Looks like it might start raining, just before the start of the race. Five to two, two o’clock. Would have preferred a dry race but it’s not going to be dry. We’ll be alright."

  • 12:54

Small puddles on track do look like there's some drops starting to affect them.

  • 12:57

The second row of the grid will be one to watch, as Vettel and Alonso go head to head to be best of the rest into the first corner.

  • 12:58

It's also worth keeping an eye on Jules Bianchi, who made his way into Q2 yesterday and secured 16th on the grid today.

  • 12:59

Tyre blankets coming off now, with every driver on soft tyres except Adrian Sutil, who has the medium compounds on his Sauber.

  • 13:00

The grid is clearing, except for Ferrari's Fernando Alonso who is still surrounded by mechanics.

  • 13:01

The formation lap begins, and he gets away before the final car passes him. That means he can now catch up to his position but it requires weaving past all the cars in front. Slightly dangerous!

  • 13:01

Race controlIncident involving Fernando Alonso under investigation - team personnel on the grid at the 15 seconds signal.

  • 13:02

  • 13:02

Kevin Magnussen reports there are light spots of rain.

  • 13:04

Rosberg pulls to a halt at the front of the grid, and the pack forms up behind him. Lewis Hamilton went a little too far and had to reverse to be in the correct spot.

  • 13:04 Lap 1

Fernando Alonso got away this time, as Lewis Hamilton surges forward to snatch the lead from Rosberg.

  • 13:05 Lap 1

  • 13:06 Lap 1

  • 13:09 Lap 3

  • 13:10 Lap 4

More booing as Rosberg receives his trophy and raises it over his head. Difficult times at Mercedes!

  • 14:39

Big cheers for Bottas though, the popular Finn picking up yet another trophy this season.

QuotePodium quotes - Daniel Ricciardo: "Back home there’s a huge following but this is nearly as many Australian flags as there were in Melbourne. A lot of Aussie fans here this weekend, thank you very much.

"Definitely a bit different, when you lead the race for that long, it’s more about composure, just looking at your lap times, trying to be as consistent as possible. Once I heard Rosberg came in for a third stop, we knew he’d be quick at the end, had to keep the lap times up and keep it clean."

QuotePodium quotes - Nico Rosberg: "I got a good run on Lewis, tried to go round the outside, we just touched in the end unfortunately. That hurt both our races so from a team point of view that’s very disappointing but that’s the way it is. I haven’t seen it yet, it wouldn’t be good of me to comment now. I need to see it on TV and then I can comment afterwards. I was pretty confident, we had very good race speed, as you saw at the end there, but unfortunately it didn’t work out for us today."

QuotePodium quotes - Valtteri Bottas: "The team has done such a good job, we are coming on the right way. Another podium, the fourth one in my career, the fourth one in this season. We’re still chasing for the highest step. For now, in this season, if we keep like this, it’s okay. It’s the future that matters.

"I think this season it’s going to be difficult [to win], we definitely need to be lucky to achieve that. Mercedes is really strong and on a track like this, Red Bull is really quick. We couldn’t really challenge Ricciardo, there’s still work to do but we’re on the right way."

QuoteInterview with a very angry looking Toto Wolff: "Absolutely unacceptable. Lap number two over a long race, a crash between two teammates. We have often discussed that situation, it happened today. I think it’s pretty clear what happened out there. You don’t try to overtake with the knife between your teeth in lap number two and then damage both cars. I think this is a decisive moment for the battle between the two of them and for the team.

"Lewis was very upset, there’s not a lot to say. We kept him out there with a very damaged car. He will recover quickly, but obviously not happy at the moment."

An interview with Lewis Hamilton shows him as calm, resigned, disappointed - as much for the team as for himself. He also explained he wasn't trying to just give up but he couldn't even catch Grosjean (rude!) and is already a power unit down on Rosberg after his last retirement.

  • 15:03

Ten out of ten for Valtteri Bottas who finished so well on the podium and far above Massa's 13th place finish. Four podiums out of the last five races for the Finn, and he'll be looking for more over the next few weeks.

  • 15:03

Difficult times at Mercedes ahead, if you thought the relationship between Lewis and Nico was already strained, then this is going to be the straw that breaks the camel's back. Expect plenty of reaction in the days that follow to that second lap incident.

TweetTweet from @redbullf1spy: Sure, Daniel’s happy now – but in the morning he’s going to see everyone else had a much more exciting afternoon and be a little annoyed

Good to see Kimi Räikkönen back on form and battling at the top. The McLaren boys also had a good afternoon scrapping for strong points positions.

An odd but intriguing race at Spa, then, and it sets us up nicely for round thirteen in Italy in two week's time. I'll be back with more FBFB fun then, I hope you can join me! And as always, stay tuned to Sidepodcast for all the news and views in between.
