  It's Spa-Francorchamps so naturally all eyes are on the skies. So far, the sun is shining but there are plenty of clouds in the sky that could turn threatening at any moment.

  With half an hour until the race gets underway, the pit lane has opened and thus drivers are heading out to see the state of the track at this point of the weekend. Qualifying was wet but the track is dry today.

  Mercedes were on top form yesterday, as per usual, with Nico Rosberg securing pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton. The Brit blamed brake problems but it's not expected to be an issue for him in the dry conditions today.

  Sebastian Vettel gets some very detailed weather information, that there are clouds coming and going over the track, there could be some spots of rain on the circuit but nothing too bad yet. It's also quite breezy.

  Of course, today is the debut of André Lotterer, who is stepping in to Kamui Kobayashi's boots for what is potentially just a one-off race. He managed to outqualify his teammate yesterday, which was an impressive start considering the conditions. On the grid now, he's starting to look a little edgy: "It’s been a steep learning curve. I’d never driven the car in the rain, there’s no worse conditions to go into qualifying. Just tried to make the most out of it, learning as fast as I can. Up until now I was okay, but of course, my first Grand Prix, it would be wrong not to be nervous."

  Nico Hülkenberg, out of place on the grid in 18th: "Yesterday we did some mistakes but today is another day. We still have a good race on our hands because the car is fast, so we should be able to recover some. First priority is to stay out of trouble, survive the first lap, then build up on it. The chance of rain climbs from 2pm onwards. My guess is it’s just going to be a slick race."

  Romain Grosjean has a seat just beside the Lotus. He's getting in the zone but also looks disappointed with 15th place on the grid.

  Kevin Magnussen, sporting the makings of a beard: "It’s a decent start position, P7. With a good start, first corner, good lap, could have a good race. Not hoping for rain, it’s too cold."

  Rob Smedley, Head of Vehicle Performance at Williams: "Slightly disappointed with qualifying yesterday, probably could have been third and fourth if everything had been perfect. Looked good on Friday with the long run in the dry. Looks like it might start raining, just before the start of the race. Five to two, two o’clock. Would have preferred a dry race but it’s not going to be dry. We’ll be alright."

  The second row of the grid will be one to watch, as Vettel and Alonso go head to head to be best of the rest into the first corner.

  It's also worth keeping an eye on Jules Bianchi, who made his way into Q2 yesterday and secured 16th on the grid today.

  Tyre blankets coming off now, with every driver on soft tyres except Adrian Sutil, who has the medium compounds on his Sauber.

  The grid is clearing, except for Ferrari's Fernando Alonso who is still surrounded by mechanics.

  The formation lap begins, and he gets away before the final car passes him. That means he can now catch up to his position but it requires weaving past all the cars in front. Slightly dangerous!

  Rosberg leads the field on a relatively speedy formation lap, with Alonso now back in position.

  Kevin Magnussen reports there are light spots of rain.

  Rosberg pulls to a halt at the front of the grid, and the pack forms up behind him. Lewis Hamilton went a little too far and had to reverse to be in the correct spot.

  Fernando Alonso got away this time, as Lewis Hamilton surges forward to snatch the lead from Rosberg.

  Into the first corner, Vettel also manages to get ahead of Rosberg, dropping the polesitter to third.

  Vettel pulls alongside Hamilton at the top of Eau Rouge to try and take the lead but couldn't stop in time and took to the run-off, losing out to Rosberg.

  Jules Bianchi has a right rear puncture and is hustling to get back to the pit lane. There were brief yellow flags earlier in the lap so there may have been contact somewhere.

  Nico Rosberg was attempting a move on his teammate, but there was contact - Nico's front wing damaged and rear puncture for Hamilton.

  Hamilton is shedding rubber from the tyre all over the track as he tries to get back to the pit lane.

  Hamilton made it back to the pit lane and has fresh tyres bolted on, but he's going to be way down the order. He rejoins in 19th place.

  Rosberg is now leading, but reports over the radio that he's lost a lot of downforce due to the front wing damage. He's causing a bit of a train now.

  Ricciardo has swept past his teammate Vettel to move up to second. He's got super pace, it can't be long before he pressures Rosberg for the lead.

  Poor Lotterer wanders back up the pitlane, he looks disappointed but resigned. As an endurance racer, four laps isn't really enough!

  Replays show Vettel ran wide, over the kerbs, which slowed him enough to allow Ricciardo to fly past.

  Vettel looks to be struggling now, with Alonso closing the gap and Bottas hunting them both down.

  Bottas makes the move in the DRS zone to pass Alonso, he locks up slightly in the following corner but retains fourth place.

  The Mercedes mechanics form up in the pit lane, with a new front wing waiting and ready. He pits, handing the lead to Ricciardo.

  Onboard footage on Rosberg's car shows some debris - presumably from Hamilton's tyre - has attached itself to the radio aerial on the front of the car, and it's flapping in his face. It could also get wrapped around the steering wheel.

  Sebastian Vettel pits from second place, with Daniel Ricciardo still leading the race - now with four seconds over Bottas.

  Vettel slides his way out of the pit lane and rejoins in 7th place, just behind Kimi Räikkönen and alongside Jean-Éric Vergne. He drag-races the Toro Rosso down to the next corner and retains 7th.

  Ricciardo pits from the lead, rejoin in front of Räikkönen, who has split the Red Bulls in that first round of stops.

  Bottas and Alonso both come in for their first stops, the Ferrari driver held up for that five second penalty.

  Vergne pits which makes that all drivers having stopped at least once. Grosjean has been into the pits twice now!

  Rosberg is back up to fourth now, whilst Hamilton is really struggling to make progress. He's in 16th.

  An out of control move from Rosberg sees him dive to the side of Vettel but hugely lock up into the following corner. He's now under pressure from Bottas as well.

  Bottas has the advantage through the next DRS zone and Rosberg's mistake costs him dearly as he drops down to fifth place.

  Vettel gets a warning over the radio to respect the track limits at certain sections. The Red Bull driver also asks if he can use his boost in defence of Bottas, who is closing in behind.

  Lewis Hamilton comes in for his second stop of the day, it's a smooth 2.9 second stop for the Brit.

  There is some hefty damage to Hamilton's Mercedes, which would explain why he's not making much progress so far.

  Meanwhile, Rosberg dives into the pit lane after complaining about vibrations on the front tyres. That would be the lock-up Nico. He takes on another set of medium tyres.

  Hamilton sets the fastest lap so far on lap 19, a 1:53.926, despite his complaints.

  Felipe Massa is down in 14th place, struggling for pace in comparison to teammate Bottas - who is up in second at the moment. There's talk that Massa picked up some debris, though, which is slowing him down.

  Four-way battle begins between the two McLarens, Alonso and Vettel. Wheel to wheel action as Chilton and Ericsson fight each other and try to keep out the way at the same time.

  In amongst that chaos, the net result is that Vettel has taken a position from Button. However, in the process, Magnussen got snarled up with the backmarkers, allowing the other two to join the fight, and Button to move up. The Brit dropped back again, though.

  The fight continued with Alonso trying to get past Magnussen, diving to the left and the right. He ran wide, though, and allowed Vettel through.

  Interview with a very angry looking Toto Wolff: "Absolutely unacceptable. Lap number two over a long race, a crash between two teammates. We have often discussed that situation, it happened today. I think it’s pretty clear what happened out there. You don’t try to overtake with the knife between your teeth in lap number two and then damage both cars. I think this is a decisive moment for the battle between the two of them and for the team.

  "Lewis was very upset, there’s not a lot to say. We kept him out there with a very damaged car. He will recover quickly, but obviously not happy at the moment."

  An interview with Lewis Hamilton shows him as calm, resigned, disappointed - as much for the team as for himself. He also explained he wasn't trying to just give up but he couldn't even catch Grosjean (rude!) and is already a power unit down on Rosberg after his last retirement.
