Pastor Maldonado brought out the first red flag, stopping Q1 just five minutes in after he crashed into the wall. He wasn't the only one struggling, as many drivers fought their cars across the line to secure the best laps possible. Jean-Éric Vergne made it through to Q2 but, along with Kevin Magnussen, didn't set a time in that second session.

Sebastian Vettel caused a red flag stoppage in the final top ten shoot-out, after his Red Bull stopped on track with gearbox problems. The fight at the top saw Mercedes dominate, and Daniel Riccardo finish best of the rest, but a strong finish by Valtteri Bottas and Romain Grosjean mix up the top ten nicely.
