Lewis Hamilton scored pole position off his teammate, but will once again line up on the front row of the grid alongside Nico Rosberg. Mercedes power was absolutely supreme around the high speed track with the top six all German engines. Fernando Alonso was the next placed car, with two Red Bulls behind him.

Kimi Räikkönen made a couple of errors on his flying laps which left him outside the top ten, and Daniil Kvyat qualified in eleventh but will take a ten place grid drop which will hurt him quite a lot. The Lotus pair were struggling with reliability, Grosjean had only a couple of laps after a fluid leak kept him in the garage, and Maldonado suffered a gearbox problem.
