Nico Rosberg finishes third day of Barcelona test on top // Mixed weather conditions in Spain see Mercedes go fastest

Published by Christine

Nico Rosberg put Mercedes on top for this third day of testing in Barcelona, as teams dealt with another day of changeable track conditions. The circuit began wet and dried up throughout the day, meaning there was quite a difference between the fastest and the slowest drivers out there.

Rosberg's speed came from a qualifying-style lap, done on low fuel and optimum tyres. Vitaly Petrov finished up second in the Renault in a similar fashion, and he was just about three tenths slower than the Mercedes.

Force India kept their heads down and got plenty of laps done, with no major problems. The team explained why their programme was tailored that way:

Sutil has done 70 laps today! Why? The more the mileage, the more the data, the better our performance at the races. #F1 #VJM04

Hamilton struggled with reliability and spent much of the morning in the garage, but the McLaren did show pace when it was allowed to really blow off some steam.

Toro Rosso had Sébastien Buemi and Daniel Ricciardo sharing the drive, with the pair finishing 9th and 13th respectively. Hispania also had two drivers on their books, with Giorgio Mondini making a brief return to Formula One. Giorgio was previously a test driver for Midland F1 back in 2006.

Meanwhile, there were a few red flags throughout the session caused by drivers spinning in the damp conditions. Mark Webber caused the final red flag just minutes before running was due to end, so he bought testing to a close early today.
