Conditions over the Hockenheim circuit were damp, with rain falling on and off throughout the session. It wasn't enough to halt running, but made the times more meaningless than they usually are. The two McLaren drivers were the fastest in the morning, Button ahead of Hamilton, with Fernando Alonso and Michael Schumacher behind. Meanwhile, it was the domain of Friday drivers once more with Bottas in at Williams, Bianchi at Force India and Dani Clos at HRT. Notably, Mark Webber was down in 20th, with no real problems apparent on the car.
