Extensive repairs to Sebastian Vettel's Red Bull meant he was unable to take part in the second practice session at all, leaving all of the attention on Daniel Ricciardo. The Australian, along with Fernando Alonso in the Ferrari, attempted to get on pace with the Mercedes pair but couldn't make up the difference. Even Nico Rosberg, who was back in action after halted running in FP1was four tenths down on teammate Lewis Hamilton.

Elsewhere, Max Chilton saw some bodywork fall off the rear of the car, and then ended the session in the gravel at turn four, after locking up and going straight on at the corner. More worryingly, Jean-Éric Vergne ended his session four minutes early after the right rear wheel fell off his car and bounced away from the Toro Rosso. Thankfully, it avoided contact with anything except the tyre barrier.
