The second session was much quieter at the Sochi Autodrom, with drivers testing out what the two different tyre compounds could do. The softer of the two really managed to drop the lap times, and McLaren benefitted hugely. Kevin Magnussen finished the session second overall, showing just what an improvement the team have made of late.

Daniel Ricciardo found himself out of the session with less than ten minutes to go, the Renault power unit in his Red Bull came to a juddering halt, leaving him stranded out on track. The narrow confines of the track meant the session had to be red flagged.
