Nico Rosberg was the fastest man in the first session at the Red Bull Ring, after the German overcame a power unit problem to take the top spot, ahead of teammate Lewis Hamilton. Fernando Alonso showed improved pace for Ferrari. In the other red car, Kimi Räikkönen was trying out some new parts on his car, in the hopes of moving up the order.

With no Friday drivers in action during the session, the rear of the field was reserved for Lotus, along with the two backmarkers. Last race winner Daniel Ricciardo failed to make it into the top ten, as he got to grips with the new track.
