Fernando Alonso's retirement from the Japanese Grand Prix was disappointing, partly because they were conditions in which he could have fought for a strong result, but also because the DNF allowed Sebastian Vettel to jump him in the driver standings.

Vettel moves up to fourth place with six points between the pair of them. Hamilton's victory ahead of teammate Nico Rosberg allowed him to extend his lead to ten points, but it's still exceptionally close as the season heads towards a tense finish.
