Lewis Hamilton qualified in second place behind Nico Rosberg, but drops down the order five places after a gearbox-related penalty. Meanwhile, Jean-Éric Vergne has been penalised for the team making changes to the car that contravene parc fermé conditions - he originally qualified eighteenth but is pushed back to last.
