Barcelona test: Day one - Felipe Massa posts the fastest time on first day

Published by Christine

It would appear that Ferrari aren't missing Michael Schumacher too much, with their remaining drivers zooming away at the first test in Barcelona today.

The weather was cool to begin with, although the sun slowly warmed up the track as it shone throughout the day, and the afternoon lap times grew faster and faster.

Felipe Massa claimed the fastest lap with his 47th of 52 journeys around the track, and Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer finished up with the third fastest time of the day.

Meanwhile, Lewis Hamilton set off his F1 career with a whimper rather than a bang, struggling round the Circuit de Catalunya a few times before picking up a mechanical problem and having to stop. The engineers quickly went to work though, and Britain's newest hope was soon back out notching up times and ultimately finishing sixth. Not bad for your first time out, but slightly shown up by test driver Pedro de la Rosa who was hot on Massa's heels in second fastest position.

Mark Webber tried out a few corners with his new team Red Bull Racing. He couldn't find much advantage from his experience on Bridgestone tyres last year but did manage to just pip his teammate David Coulthard despite completing less laps.

In other testing news:

  • Jenson Button made an appearance at the track, but couldn't take part in any of the driving due to his injured ribs.
  • Heidfeld was out for BMW, testing out a new transmission, and was followed by Robert Kubica, concentrating on the tyres, when the temperatures warmed up.
  • The persistant rumours of Mika Häkkinen turning up to test for McLaren seem yet to be realised.
  • Renault put forward Nelson Piquet Jr and Heikki Kovaleinen but neither put in outstanding laps, finishing 10th and 12th consecutively.
  • Anthony Davidson was working hard for his new team Super Aguri, although it's hard to spot how his day job has changed - he was a test driver and now he's testing... I bet he can't wait for the racing to start. And he's not the only one.
