Alonso a McLaren fan since '05 // Ron Dennis reveals first talks with Fernando

Published by Christine

Ron Dennis has confirmed that McLaren had signed, sealed and delivered a contract with Fernando Alonso just a couple of weeks after the Brazilian Grand Prix in 2005.

It seems like an awfully long time ago now, but it was the third race from the end of the season, when Alonso climbed up on the podium to take a trophy and become the world champion.

Chief of McLaren, Dennis remembers that day fondly.

Our first conversation took place on the podium in Brazil... He talked to me about how much he liked our car and I asked him if he wanted to be part of our family. Two weeks later we met in secret in Japan. And three weeks after that race, he signed the contract with us. It was all very fast and easy.

If only all driver signings were so hassle free.
