2010 F1 New Year resolutions revisited - A recap of how the pre-season promises worked out

Published by Christine

For the second year in a row, we made some F1 related New Year's Resolutions, promising five different things each that would make our year following the sport much better. Just before 2009 turned into 2010, Mr C and I both chose our resolutions, and then invited you to do the same. Now the time has come to review how we have done over the past 12 months, and in a few days it will be time to choose some more.

I will begin with mine, as I know I have not done very well at all.

1) Try and stay up later to take part in the best conversations.

Sometimes this happened, particularly on a Friday night and definitely now that it is the Christmas holidays. However, I'm still a very sleepy person and it's been quite a stressful year, so I haven't done as well at this as I should have.

2) Speak to Franck.

Oops. Not entirely my fault, as he did disappear off the face of the planet towards the latter half of the year. I probably could have made more of an effort when he was Superleaguing it, but I know I wouldn't be able to speak to him given the opportunity anyway.

3) Keep track of birthdays and Sidepodversaries for daily post shoutouts.

I haven't written a daily for a pretty long time now, which I am eternally grateful for, so this one was taken out of my hands mid-way through the year. We did let the calendar fall behind though, which is something I am determined not to allow to continue. I may have to roll this resolution forward.

4) Expand collection of F1 themed keyrings.

I didn't even begin this really. I still own the one Williams keyring, and to be very honest with you, I had to whittle down the amount of stuff on my keys as it was starting to bug me. Not one to want to leave clutter lying around the house, this resolution seems to have been misguided as well.

5) Try and stay more positive about Formula 1 as a whole.

Now, this is two-fold. Clearly, there was the hiatus, the downshift, the big departure, whatever you want to call it. That is about as opposite to staying positive as you can get. However, and I'm sure we all know this by now, it was exactly what we needed to re-evaluate our perspective on F1. At the start of the year, it was a desperate situation and how we felt about the sport impacted on this site in negative ways. Now we are in a position that even if the sport is moving away from where we want it to, it makes little difference. It is the people that make Sidepodcast what it is, and understanding that, I think, is what keeps us more positive. So I have failed this one, but in the best possible way.

Resolutions score: 0/5. Go me!

Now let us turn our attention to Mr C and what he promised us at the start of 2010.

Mr C

1) Stop making ludicrous bets with Lou, otherwise I'll end up wearing McLaren attire all season.

We can't even remember what this is about! He does seem to have stopped betting people, though, which is a good thing. I'm not sure I've spotted him wearing McLaren merchandise either. I'll take this one as a success.

2) Read the show notes.

We stopped podcasting for a good proportion of the year, which has obviously helped him escape this one for a few months. However, we picked it up again towards the end of the season, and I can personally verify that he still does not read the show notes.

3) Make more use of the playground for blindingly brilliant innovations.

Once the hiatus happened and we could turn our attention to building up the site to be "blindingly brilliant", the playground was no longer needed. However, this still counts as a win, because a lot of the things that were tested out there have been folded into this ongoing design, and I think it's safe to say there is some excellent innovation happening here on Sidepodcast. I can say that because I do very little except to stamp my foot and demand ever more from my happy little coder.

4) Never miss a single word that Christine writes over her many blogs, including the contents of the daily posts... and F1 Minute.

He made a much better attempt at this than ever before, although it's safe to say I have started writing about things I couldn't pay him to read (The Archers being a case in point). We came to a compromise, that I would plug things he should read in the comments. If I didn't plug it, he couldn't be held responsible for not reading. Deal.

The daily posts are something else though. I've never seen a man more eager for midnight to come around each and every day. The new content that our varied writers bring is amazing and excellent, and have revived the interest in the daily that was lacking when it was just me struggling for content each day. I don't think this would need to be a resolution anymore, but we know that he has succeeded anyway.

5) Finally get round to making that merchandise Christine keeps nagging me about.

Erm, no. This didn't happen. Yet.

Resolutions score: 3/5

So, that's it. Mr C beat me this year, so I will have to try much harder in 2011. As mentioned at the start of the post, we will look to make our New Year Resolutions for 2011 very soon, but for now there is still time to look back at the year just gone. If you made resolutions, either on the original post or personally, then please let us know how you got on. There are no prizes, but I will give everyone who did better than me a big pat on the back. Well done!
