This is F1Minute - Vettel excluded from qualifying due to insufficient fuel.
Sebastian Vettel crossed the finish line third in qualifying at Abu Dhabi earlier today, but he stopped out on track soon afterwards. The medical car had to be dispatched to pick him up and deliver him to the press conference, and questions were asked whether the breakdown was mechanical or due to fuel.
The stewards have looked into the incident and declared that the Red Bull car failed to deliver a sufficient quantity of fuel for sampling purposes. As the FIA statement says: “The stewards determine this is a breach of Article 6.6.2 of the Technical Regulations and the Competitor is accordingly excluded from the results of the qualifying session. The Competitor is however allowed to start the race from the back of the grid.”
This news will brighten Fernando Alonso’s day, after his seventh place grid position looked disappointing earlier - he’s now been promoted to sixth place. There are 13 points between Vettel and Alonso in the championship, and it is all to play for tomorrow.
