Nico Rosberg took pole position for the Belgian Grand Prix after a fight to the top against Red Bull’s Max Verstappen, and Ferrari’s Kimi Räikkönen. The top five in the final top ten shoot-out were split by less than half a second, proving how competitive this weekend has been so far.
It wasn’t so competitive for Fernando Alonso, whose McLaren picked up a potential engine problem and failed to set a lap time. He has a hefty set of grid penalties to take anyway for tomorrow’s race, as does Lewis Hamilton. The Brit did complete a lap time in qualifying but was last of the runners knowing he’ll be at the back of the field on Sunday.
Daniil Kvyat endured another rough day for Toro Rosso, dropping out in Q1 and finishing 19th overall. Carlos Sainz managed 14th on the grid, but has also said that Spa isn’t one of their best circuits.
Elsewhere, Pascal Wehrlein put on another good show for Manor, squeezing into Q2 and finishing 15th overall, whilst Jenson Button clawed his way into Q3 for McLaren and finished ninth.
