The Sauber team have revealed a new partnership with IndyCar racer Simona De Silvestro, signing her up as an “affiliate” driver for 2014 and beyond.
Having spent four years racing in the IndyCar series, winning rookie of the year in 2010 and finishing 2013 with a highlight second place podium finish in Houston, De Silvestro says she’s ready for a new challenge. “This is a major step towards me achieving a life-long dream and I’m so happy to have the opportunity… the Sauber F1 team is a team with a legacy and the only Swiss team in F1, which I think makes this even more exciting.”
Meanwhile, team principal of Sauber, Monisha Kaltenborn welcomes Simona, saying: “Her ambition is to enter Formula One in 2015, we regard her as a very talented race driver and therefore decided to take her on board as an affiliated driver.”
The role will see Simona work towards getting a super licence, with on track testing, time in the Sauber simulator and plenty of physical preparation as well.
