The FIA have confirmed that this month’s young driver test at Silverstone will be opened up to more experienced drivers, in an effort to establish what is wrong with the Pirelli tyres.
The Young Driver requirement was not so much to do with age as how much racing experience a driver has, and following the significant tyre problems seen at the British Grand Prix this weekend, the test will “now allow teams to field drivers who have competed in more than two F1 World Championship events, provided it is clear that the purpose of them doing this is to test tyres for Pirelli. The test may also be extended by one day.”
Mercedes’ ban still stands from their hearing last month, and they have accepted the new conditions without protest.
FIA President Jean Todt said: “Our priority is to ensure safety for all in Formula One and we believe the incidents at Silverstone represent a genuine safety concern... I believe it is fitting to carry out this work at the circuit upon which the issues were manifested.”
