Hello and welcome to F1Minute - Sam Michael set to move from Williams to McLaren.
The departure of Williams’ Technical Director Sam Michael was confirmed earlier this year, but his contract with the team does not run out until after the Singapore Grand Prix. His future was under speculation but it was announced today that he’ll join McLaren as Sporting Director - the role that Dave Ryan left after the fallout from McLaren versus the stewards in Australia 2009.
Michael will be responsible for all things trackside, and talking about his new opportunity, he says: “I’m extremely excited to be joining Vodafone McLaren Mercedes. Being a racer my whole life, I know that McLaren is one of the all time greats... I’ve spent 11 seasons with WilliamsF1, have many fond memories, and truly wish them all the best.”
Williams also issued a press release to confirm the news, and team boss Frank Williams said: “I am delighted that Sam has found a new role that will enable him to continue to apply his energy, passion and experience to Formula One. I would also like to thank Sam for his help in enabling a swift and smooth transition to our new technical leadership.”
