With only 18 drivers participating in qualifying for the US Grand Prix, the sessions were altered slightly to have four drop out in Q1, four in Q2 and then the usual ten scrapping for grid positions in Q3.
Sebastian Vettel appeared in Q1 but only briefly, he qualified second from last, knowing he’ll be starting from the pit lane due to an engine change. Romain Grosjean was last in a disappointing session for the Frenchman.
Pastor Maldonado just missed out on the top ten, but Adrian Sutil brightened Sauber’s mood with a top ten finish - he did a lap in Q3 but couldn’t go any higher than tenth place. At the front, Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton were duking it out for pole position and Rosberg put the hammer down with Hamilton unable to piece together a comfortable lap. Mercedes locked out the front row with both Williams drivers appearing on the second, Bottas ahead of Massa.
Jenson Button will take a five place drop from his P7 qualifying spot, whilst Daniil Kvyat secured 14th but has a ten place power unit penalty of his own to take.
