Qualifying got underway with only five drivers to be knocked out in the first session – after Esteban Gutiérrez was unable to participate. The Sauber driver crashed during final practice which left the team with too much repair work to do in too short a time. Along with the four backmarker drivers, Pastor Maldonado dropped out in Q1, after his Lotus stopped with a power unit problem.

Q2 saw Adrian Sutil only attempt one flying lap and finishing that session last. Nico Hülkenberg narrowly missed out on getting into the top ten, with teammate Sergio Pérez also dropping out.

The final shootout for pole position was naturally between the two Mercedes drivers. Lewis Hamilton’s practice domination saw him the favourite but he was pipped to the post by Rosberg – the pair split by less than a tenth of a second. Sebastian Vettel was third fastest, with the two Williams drivers just behind him.
