Nico Rosberg had the better start to the season of the two Mercedes drivers, but teammate Lewis Hamilton quickly moved ahead with the Brit having won four of the five races so far. His last victory in Spain also allowed Hamilton to step into the lead of the championship, which Rosberg’s consistent podium finishes had allowed him to keep hold of until then.
Now, with his home race just around the corner, Rosberg is hoping to turn the tide, saying: “In general, it has been a tough battle up until now. I expect it to continue like that. Hamilton has had the result rhythm in a couple of races but it’s been close. I just need a tiny bit to turn it around and I will try to do that in Monaco.”
It’s not just his teammate who will be hoping to get ahead of Nico in Monte Carlo, as Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso pinpoints the principality as their best hope for someone beating the Mercedes. He said: “In the corners they are very fast, but on the straights they seem to lose a lot of lap time. In Monte Carlo there are no straights, so Red Bull could challenge Mercedes there.” Shame he doesn’t have quite so much faith in his own team, though.
