Rosberg may not have ended the season in style, finishing runner up to Lewis Hamilton in the final few races, but he got the job done and claimed his first F1 title in the final round in Abu Dhabi. The German driver admitted that the pressure of the competition did start to get to him. Talking after his victory, Rosberg said: “It’s been my best season and I’ve done my best ever races this year. The last couple of races, especially the last one, that’s not the real Nico. The pressure slows you down. It’s difficult, so I’m happy to have come through in the way that I did.”
Mercedes chief, Paddy Lowe, is proud of his driver, saying: “Many people can win a race but a championship is about that endurance. This is the longest season in the history of the sport… Holding his nerve through all of that, these are the marks of a great champion.”
And boss Toto Wolff added: “Nico is a tough cookie and he doesn’t let go. There are quite some remarkable character traits about him that make him a world champion and a worthy world champion.”
