Rio Haryanto has been one of the names in the frame for the final seat at Manor Racing for a while, and today he confirmed that he has secured the last grid spot for 2016. The Indonesian racer and his manager have been working tirelessly to secure funding for the seat and have managed to do so just in time for testing to begin.
Rio has previously been linked with the team, driving for the Manor outfit in the GP3 series. His success there earned him a test with the then Virgin Racing F1 squad, and he also tested for then Marussia in 2012.
Now he’s set for his first full season in the sport, and has opted to use the number 88 for his F1 career. Manor will be running another double rookie strategy but team owner Stephen Fitzpatrick has faith. He says: “Rio’s been racing since he first got into a kart at six years old. He’s tenacious on and off the track and made a big impression on last year’s GP2 battle. Rio’s huge following in Indonesia is great for the team and for F1.”
