With news that Nico Hülkenberg was joining the Renault squad from 2017 onwards, the question on everybody’s lips – would it be Jolyon Palmer or Kevin Magnussen who was retained alongside him?
The answer has now arrived and it is Palmer who has been given the go ahead to participate in his second season in Formula One. Magnussen has more points from 2016 so far but Palmer has impressed the bosses. Jerome Stoll, chief at Renault Sport, said: “Jolyon has shown his hunger to develop with us as the team grows and we have been impressed with his increasingly strong performances on track as the season has progressed.”
Palmer added: “For me, it’s been a steep learning curve driving in Formula One and I know that I’m performing better than ever, and there’s still more to come. There is tremendous drive and enthusiasm in Enstone and Viry looking to next year and I’m honoured to be a part of it.”
Kevin Magnussen is left currently without a drive for next year, although he has been strongly linked with the Haas team to join alongside Romain Grosjean.
