After a strong performance in his first race for Red Bull, Daniel Ricciardo had his trademark smile in full force on the podium, celebrating a second place finish in Melbourne. After the race, the stewards took a closer look at the car and decided there was an irregularity with the fuel flow. The rules state only 100kg/h fuel flow which is an additional measure on top of the overall fuel limit.

The stewards issued a very long document with their reasons but ultimately found the flow through the car to be too high, that the team had been contacted mid-race to make an adjustment but they had not done so. Disqualification soon followed.

Red Bull intend to appeal the decision, with a brief statement saying: “Inconsistencies with the FIA fuel flow meter have been prevalent all weekend up and down the pit lane. The Team and Renault are confident the fuel supplied to the engine is in full compliance with the regulations.”
