The first four days of pre-season testing are complete, with Ferrari leading three and Sauber heading up one of them. Both teams use the Ferrari engine which is a good sign for those under Scuderia power. Of course, times aren’t the be all and end all, particularly at this early stage, lap counts are arguably more important.
It’ll come as no surprise to know that Mercedes topped the lap count with 516 across the four days. McLaren’s struggles saw them end with 79 laps to their name, with Red Bull and Lotus also at the lower end of the scale. Having said that, Romain Grosjean got his first taste of the E23 for Lotus on the final day, and declared himself a happy driver, so they must have done something right.
Pirelli revealed that no supersoft tyres were used over the four days, despite being available. The tyre supplier also said they brought a special winter tyre which was used extensively. They aren’t putting too much stock into times or data, however, instead looking forward to the first of the Barcelona tests which begins on the 19th February.
