Kimi Räikkönen managed to finish both the Friday practice sessions in second place, pipped to P1 in both by a Mercedes driver. In the afternoon, he was just 0.035 seconds off Nico Rosberg’s pace, and although practice times aren’t the be all and end all of a weekend, the Finn thinks things are improving.
He said: “This was definitely a positive day and I had a better feeling compared to Friday in Melbourne. I was more comfortable with the F14 T today.” Fernando Alonso was a little more reticent to speak of improvements, simply saying: “Everything went well, with no reliability problems and we managed to do a fair number of laps.”
The team are hoping this weekend will be better overall than their time in Australia, after it was reported they had a software glitch which robbed them of some energy recovery during the race.
There’s a threshold speed cars have to reach before the braking recovery is allowed to be automatically deployed, and the software didn’t register that Alonso or Räikkönen had reached it. The team are confident it has been fixed for this weekend.
