Although Pirelli thought they had confirmed all the tyre compounds they’d be using for the 2014 season, they’ve made a small tweak for the race after next - the Brazilian Grand Prix. A statement from the Italian manufacturer says: “Although the hard and medium nomination has been used in Brazil for the last two years, the recent resurfacing of the Interlagos track has prompted the change to medium and soft. This new choice is the same nomination as the US Grand Prix the weekend before.”
Motorsport director Paul Hembery says the company have always been open to change, and the decision came about after a meeting with the Tyre Working Group. Felipe Massa had been particularly outspoken about the choice, saying: “I have no idea why they chose medium and hard, it’s completely unacceptable… It’s a track that can have rain, it can be cold, but you have the hard tyre and it can be dangerous. Normally whatever track I go to where they put down new asphalt, it gets even easier on the tyres.”
