Mercedes reserve driver Pascal Wehrlein has been waiting in the wings of the Formula One paddock for a few years now, and the German driver finally gets his chance to step up in 2016. He’s signed to Manor Racing for one year, their first driver announcement for the season so far. The deal surrounds the engine supply Manor will receive from Mercedes, but the team will also be granted use of Mercedes’ wind tunnel at Brackley for the year as well.
Wehrlein has modest hopes for his debut, saying: “It’s a small and totally focused team and I soon hope to know everyone. Though it’s my first season my aim is to help the guys achieve their goals. It will be a tough challenge, but I think we should be able to challenge for points along the way.”
The racer revealed his helmet colours of orange, white and black, with his driver number – 94. He’ll make his debut in Australia with the team, leaving just one grid spot open for the second Manor seat.
