Renault have confirmed that Nick Heidfeld will be sitting in for Robert Kubica for the timebeing, with the German making his full time debut in the Barcelona test at the end of this week. Heidfeld participated in the Jerez test for one day, along with Bruno Senna who also had hopes for the seat, but Renault have given it to the far more experienced Heidfeld.
Team principal at Renault, Éric Boullier, is confident with their choice, saying: “The team has been through a very difficult couple of weeks and we had to react quickly. We gave Nick a chance in Jerez last week and he really impressed us. He’s quick, experienced, and is very strong technically with his feedback and understanding of the car.”
Meanwhile, Heidfeld himself admits he wishes his return to F1 was under better circumstances than his former teammate injured, but adds: “I’ve been very impressed by what I have seen so far in terms of the facilities and the dedication of the people at Enstone.”
