For those who like to plan ahead, news that the Australian Grand Prix will remain on the calendar at the Melbourne street circuit for the foreseeable future will be welcome. The track had a contract until the end of 2015, but that has now been extended until 2020. Premier of the State of Victoria, Denis Napthine said: “Within this contract we hope to see Australia’s own Daniel Ricciardo win the Formula 1 Australian Grand Prix and become World Champion.”
The man himself said: “Great news that the Australian Grand Prix has extended its contract. We love racing in Oz so not only myself but I’m sure all drivers are pleased with this one!” As if to prove his point, Romain Grosjean had earlier said: “Good news about Melbourne Grand Prix confirmed until 2020. Love so much going down there and racing in Albert Park.”
Race organiser Ron Walker had been critical of the new-style F1, but he continued with the reported 12 months of negotiations to seal a new deal for Formula One in Melbourne.
