Alexander Rossi has become the second substitute for the Spa weekend, as Marussia confirmed the American in place of Max Chilton. Rossi only left Caterham in mid-July, and one month later has secured his place behind the wheel of the MR03. Marussia say he is: “substituting for Max Chilton while contractual issues are resolved.” However, a statement from Chilton’s PR company says otherwise, that he has volunteered to give up his race seat to “allow the team to attract much needed funds by selling his seat.”
Team principal John Booth comes across as somewhat reluctant as well, saying: “Although it was not our intention to offer Alexander the possibility to race this season, in light of the circumstances we are pleased to be providing him with the opportunity.”
It looks like Rossi himself is the only party happy with this situation, and he says: “It’s a very big moment for me and there’s a lot to prepare in a short space of time, but on the other hand I have felt ready for this for quite a while now.”
