Lewis Hamilton’s pole position put him in the best possible place to take victory at the Hungaroring, a track he knows well and has won at several times before. He led away from the line through a clean first corner, although further back there was contact between Nico Rosberg and Felipe Massa. Rosberg later retired from the race with an engine blowout too.

Adrian Sutil retired from his 100th Grand Prix, and the others that didn’t see the chequered flag were Esteban Gutiérrez, Paul di Resta and Valtteri Bottas. It wasn’t all bad for Williams, as remaining driver Pastor Maldonado clawed his way up to tenth place, picking up the team’s first point.

Meanwhile, Grosjean found himself in a couple of incidents, penalised for overtaking Massa off-road, and investigated for causing a collision with Jenson Button. Both McLaren drivers finished in the points. At the front, Lewis Hamilton charged for victory, whilst Kimi Räikkönen held off Sebastian Vettel for second place. Mark Webber used his alternate strategy to those around him to pick up a very useful fifth place.
