The first session of qualifying, under the daylight skies of Abu Dhabi, saw Adrian Sutil drop out early, behind rival Esteban Gutiérrez in the Sauber.
The second session also held a surprise. As the sun was starting to set, it was Fernando Alonso who couldn’t make it through to his more normal qualifying position - it’s the first time this year that the Spaniard hasn’t managed to get through to Q3. Jenson Button also dropped out in Q2, and he was disappointed after a better showing in final practice, and because his teammate Sergio Pérez was up in fifth that session.
The final top ten shootout, under floodlights, saw Sebastian Vettel set a seemingly unbeatable provisional pole, only for his teammate Mark Webber to cross the line a tenth faster. On his final run, Lewis Hamilton spun off bringing out the yellow flags. He said “something busted” on the car, but he was still fourth fastest, with Nico Rosberg just ahead of him.
