Jules Bianchi is in a critical but stable condition in hospital after incurring a severe head injury during the Japanese Grand Prix. The FIA spokesman, Matteo Bonciani, has confirmed the Frenchman’s condition, and added: “It should be understood that it is very, very serious.”

Bianchi crashed into one of the recovery vehicles that was collecting Adrian Sutil’s Sauber, after the German himself spun out of the race. Bianchi’s accident was very similar, aquaplaning off track, but by then the tractor had moved in to place.

He was taken by ambulance to the nearby Mie General Hospital for urgent surgery, and has been moved into intensive care. His parents arrived today, and there are driver, team and FIA personnel at the hospital to support them at this difficult time.

Marussia have issued their own statement to “acknowledge the huge outpouring of support and affection” but have also asked for patience when it comes to updates on Bianchi’s condition.
