Polesitter Nico Rosberg led the way off the line and through the safety car period that followed a first lap crash. Sergio Pérez and Adrian Sutil collided, putting both drivers out of the race and bringing out the safety car for the next few laps. Nico Hülkenberg was the only other retirement, a double DNF for the Force India team.
Meanwhile, Rosberg lost out to Lewis Hamilton who overtook his teammate for the lead and never looked back. Behind them, scrap upon scrap for the final points positions. Vettel was trying to claw his way back up the order, Alonso was taking on anyone and everyone who got near him, whilst the McLaren duo attempted to maximise their results.
Daniel Ricciardo picked up the final podium place, with Felipe Massa behind. Pastor Maldonado eased into the top ten to pick up his first points of the season, whilst Romain Grosjean missed out after a collision with Jean-Éric Vergne that the Toro Rosso driver was later penalised for.
