Lewis Hamilton led away from pole, remained out front for every lap and took a comfortable race victory over teammate Valtteri Bottas. Behind him, though, there was chaos. Max Verstappen swept up into second off the line but his Red Bull gave up just a few laps later. Carlos Sainz swiped into Felipe Massa, knocking them both out of the race on the first lap. Sebastian Vettel took some front wing damage that dropped him down the order but he fought back to fourth place.
Fernando Alonso pulled to a halt on the penultimate lap, whilst Daniil Kvyat was the only other retirement of the race – after failing to get off the start line for the formation lap, then when he was going, failing to catch up the pack and picking up two penalties for that after the FIA decided the first one wasn’t harsh enough.
Lance Stroll picked up his first points in F1 by finishing ninth, but all attention was on Force India. Pérez was leading Ocon and it was strongly suggested to him that he might move aside to allow Ocon the chance at a podium… but he didn’t. They finished the race fifth and sixth, Pérez ahead, and Ocon an unhappy three tenths of a second behind.
