Welcome to F1Minute - Hamilton switches to Mercedes for next season.

The speculation is finally over, as Mercedes have confirmed Lewis Hamilton will race alongside Nico Rosberg for the 2013 season. Hamilton leaves McLaren after six years racing for them in Formula One, and a much longer association before that. The move to Mercedes, a three year deal, comes on the back of a lot of rumours of dissatisfaction at his current outfit, and the man himself hails this as a fresh start.

He says: “I’m very excited to begin a new chapter racing for the Mercedes team. Mercedes-Benz has such an incredible heritage in motorsport, along with a passion for winning which I share.”

With two drivers signed for next year, there’s no room left for Michael Schumacher, who leaves Mercedes after three years, and what you might consider a muted comeback. The seven times champion says: “I wish Lewis well and for the team to achieve the success we worked so hard for in the build-up.”

Finally, team boss Ross Brawn welcomes his new signing, but pointed out explicitly that: “Lewis didn’t come here because we offered more money - because we didn’t.”
