Formula One Management have released a statement that confirms the cameraman who was hit by an out of control tyre at the German Grand Prix this weekend is expected to make a full recovery. Paul Allen remains in hospital with a broken collarbone and fractured ribs, and attention has now turned to how much worse the incident could have been.
It was a tyre from Mark Webber’s car that went flying down the pitlane, and the Red Bull team have been fined 30,000 Euros for an unsafe release. Team principal Christian Horner, has said: “It’s a timely reminder that things can go wrong... the mechanics wear safety gear and helmets. Maybe it is time that we looked at safety equipment for other operational people working in the pit lane.”
FOM chief Bernie Ecclestone has also been quoted as saying: “There was a whole bunch of mechanics and the tyre could have hit any one of those guys. The cameraman just happened to be looking the wrong way at the wrong time. In future, all our camera crews will only be allowed to film from the pit wall.”
