Speculation about the future of Ferrari driver Fernando Alonso has reached fever pitch of late, particularly with Sebastian Vettel’s revelation that he’s departing Red Bull. With rumours abounding that the German multi-champion is headed for the Scuderia, the idea that Alonso could be on the way out for pastures new has been circling the paddock.
This week, former Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo appeared on a television programme to celebrate his career with the Italian team, and revealed that Alonso is moving on. Di Montezemolo said: “Fernando is leaving for two reasons. One, he wants another environment and two, because he’s at an age where he cannot wait to win again.”
Although the endless speculation does us no good, Alonso did reportedly tell US broadcasters that he wasn’t headed to a team powered by Mercedes - which would indicate a move to McLaren. There’s also talk of him taking a year out, but Alonso has played down that thought. He simply says: “Just relax, enjoy, and when it is time to know it, you will know it.”
