One of the three remaining race seats has been filled today, with Caterham announcing their new driver Giedo van der Garde. It’s a promotion for the Dutch driver, as he was test and reserve driver for the team last year and also raced with the Caterham team in GP2. After some free practice sessions in the car last year, he’s taking the step up to join Charles Pic as the lineup for 2013.
Talking of the opportunity, Giedo says: “I know I’m ready to take the step up to F1 and all the work I have done throughout my career, and particularly in the last year with this team, has brought me to my ultimate goal... Now I can continue to learn at the highest level of motorsport and show that I’m ready for F1. I cannot wait to start.”
Team Principal at Caterham, Cyril Abiteboul, said: “He acquitted himself extremely well in both his GP2 season and his six FP1 sessions, progressively improving his outright pace, technical feedback and his relationship with his engineers and mechanics.”
