This is F1Minute for the 25th July 2009.

We saw an amazingly hectic qualifying session today, after Lewis Hamilton took the fastest time in Free Practice 3.

Quali 1 offered a few surprises, as two BMWs dropped out as did Alguersuari, who’s Toro Rosso pulled to a stop with an engine failure.

In the last moments of the second session, Massa had an enormous crash, running straight on into the barriers. He was taken to the medical centre and on to hospital, conscious but in a serious condition. The Q2 dropouts included Barrichello, and two Toyotas.

Finally, Quali 3 was as exciting as ever, but as the drivers crossed to complete their final laps, live timing broke, and no one knew what was going on. The drivers all crowded round the FIA officials, who didn’t know anymore than we did. Eventually, we found out that Alonso had secured pole - he is super light, though - with Vettel and Webber behind him.

That’s all for now, I’ll be back with more on Massa later.
