Lewis Hamilton lost his pole position off the line and must have been disappointed to see a fast-starting Sebastian Vettel charge into the first corner in the lead. However, Ferrari resorted to bad strategy calls that allowed Lewis to get ahead by the end of the race, and Vettel had nothing left in his tyres to fight back. Daniel Ricciardo finished a distant third, with all but the top three going one lap down.

Meanwhile, Max Verstappen and Kimi Räikkönen were out on the first lap after a collision between them, whilst Stoffel Vandoorne also retired when he bumped off another car and became beached in the gravel. Finally, Valtteri Bottas did a good job holding up Vettel when it counted, but couldn't get to the chequered flag because his engine gave up halfway through the afternoon.
