Mercedes were on top for the second session in a row with Hamilton once more ahead of teammate Bottas. Ferrari were firmly behind them, but had closed the gap a little from the morning's running. The wind had picked up which meant drivers were struggling to keep control of their cars, many running wide and both Vettel and Verstappen doing battle with the gravel.

Räikkönen came into the pitlane reporting an engine problem but he didn't stop, simply continued on back out on track. Sainz went over the kerbs hard in his Toro Rosso and deposited some carbon fibre on the track. The red flags came out whilst the offending item was collected.
