Rain in the morning left the Marina Bay circuit damp and slippery as the first session get underway. The rain stopped but the track took a while to dry up, and drivers were left running wide and bumping into barriers all around the lengthy circuit. Two test drivers were in action, with Sean Gelael making his F1 debut for Toro Rosso, and Antonio Giovinazzi in the Haas once again.

Force India ran with a new and unique upgrade to their shark fin, whilst all eyes were on Red Bull as they stormed ahead. Ricciardo finished fastest, with the Mercedes pair getting the weekend off to a slightly slower start than normal.
