There were two drivers affected by penalties for the grid in Russia, with both Carlos Sainz for Toro Rosso and Stoffel Vandoorne for McLaren demoted down the order. Sainz had a drop of three positions after being deemed responsible for the crash between him and Lance Stroll in Bahrain. The grid drop rolled forward to the next race, so has been applied here in Russia.

Meanwhile, Stoffel Vandoorne has taken the first of what is likely to be many Honda related power unit penalties. The McLaren driver had a total of 15 grid positions to fall, but of course, simply moved to the rear of the field after qualifying 17th.

  • 3 place drop for Carlos Sainz Jr. Collision with car 18 (Lance Stroll) in turn 1 of Bahrain. The Stewards decided Sainz was predominately to blame for causing the collision, therefore a drop of 3 grid positions at the drivers' next event was awarded.
  • 15 place drop for Stoffel Vandoorne. 10 grid positions for 5th TC, and 5 grid positions for 5th MGU-H.
