The Russian fans were disappointed not to be able to cheer on home driver Sirotkin in the morning, and they suffered another setback with Daniil Kvyat spinning in front of his fans. Many of the drivers were pushing too hard as the spins and tyre lock-ups started to mount up.

Max Verstappen managed to post the fifth fastest time, but the Red Bull star also came to a halt at the pit lane entry when his engine gave up. Meanwhile, Ferrari made it two sessions in a row with Vettel topping the times and Kimi Räikkönen not too far behind him.
